The Real Struggles MBA Students Face While Completing Their Projects
When I began my MBA project I thought it would be simple. Pick a theme, do some research, then write it up and submit. Easy. I had envisioned finishing it in a few weeks and a couple of late nights prior to the deadline. It was a shock to the system. The project will not be simply a report. It tests your strategy, perseverance and ability to deal with unexpected challenges. Everyone in my class suffered in a way.
Many students believe that they are able to treat the project like regular work or case studies. After a few weeks, they realize that deadlines are closer than anticipated, data is incomplete, chapters are not connected, or connect, and motivation levels drop. The MBA project could be overwhelming in the event that you fail to manage it properly.
This article will highlight the most common challenges students face as well as ways to deal with these. There's no perfect formula but it is helpful to learn from past experiences immensely.
Choosing a Topic Is Harder Than It Looks
The choice of a topic may be easy, but the truth is that it's not. I made the mistake of choosing a topic, which seemed intriguing but was nearly impossible to achieve. It took weeks as I attempted to gather data from companies that never replied. Some of my peers chose interesting topics without worrying about whether or not data was available. The result is identical. You waste weeks and feel overwhelmed.
A practical topic is far better than a dazzling one. The topic should be in line with your available resources and your passion. For example instead of "The Future of Marketing in India" pick "Social Media Marketing Strategies in Local Retail Stores." It's focused, the data is much easier to collect, and the goals are clearly defined.
Objectives Are More Important Than You Think
Goals are the foundation of your entire project. Most students fall into the error to write vague objectives such as "To study the impact of leadership on productivity." The results aren't clear. I had to write mine several times to make them measurable and lucid.
Specific objectives assist you in deciding methods, data collection and analysis. If you don't have clear objectives, your project is not connected. It was my experience to think about what exactly I'm looking in order to determine and how can determine if I'm successful. These types of questions make an enormous difference in the quality of my work.
Collecting and Analysing Data Is Painful
Data collection is one of the areas where students have difficulty. I contacted small businesses with surveys. Many ignored me completely while others promised me answers that were never delivered. The online surveys can be helpful but the answers can be a bit sporadic.
Analytical thinking is a different challenge. One can have perfect charts and tables but if you can't explain the meaning behind them, they're useless. Students copied graphs and charts without understanding. Data does not establish anything unless you discuss them.
It is a good idea to test your survey in the presence of a few individuals before. It can help you identify confusing questions and can help avoid time. Always link your analysis with goals. If, for instance your project is to study customer satisfaction, make certain your questionnaire asks quantifiable questions about product quality, service performance and speed of response.
Time Management Is Tough
Everyone agrees that time management is crucial but in MBA it's harder than it does. Between group work, lectures as well as internships, there is always a lack of time. The chapters I was putting off thought I could complete them in a few days. Weeks later I was panicking.
Breaking the project down into smaller tasks is helpful. It can be divided into literature reviews research, methodology, data acquisition and analysis, as well as writing chapters on their own. Make small steps each week. An even a single chapter or section completed per week can be motivating.
Writing Is Harder Than You Think
Even with data prepared writing can be a challenge. I was struggling to write about the results in simple language. Some of the sections were repetitive. I had to rewrite the chapter on analysis many times.
Make your language clear and simple. Encourage your classmates to look over sections. Sometimes being too immersed in your work, it becomes difficult to identify errors. Fresh eyes help a lot.
Supervisors Can Be Helpful But Also Frustrating
Working with a supervisor is difficult. Some offer clear instructions while others are vague and difficult to work with. I waited for two weeks for one response, which delayed my progress.
The trick is to be proactive. Set up specific questions, promptly follow up and write down feedback. Supervisors may help but you need to take responsibility for your own work.
Formatting and References Matter
I was hesitant to format at first. Fonts, spacing, certificates. I thought they could be fixed later. Big mistake. It could have delayed submission.
References are equally vital. One missing citation can raise questions. Use tools to manage the references you have and continue writing chapters instead of waiting to finish. Correct formatting will make your document easy to understand and more professional.
Stress Is Real
Stress is unavoidable. Deadlines, corrections or incomplete information can become overwhelming. In the evenings, I sat staring at the screen feeling like I'd never be finished.
Short breaks help. Talking to friends, going for a walk, or listening to music. Recognize small victories. Completing a literature review or gathering data are all milestones. They can keep motivation in check.
Ethical Confusion
A lot of students fret about how much help is permitted. There is a possibility of asking for guidance but can't ask for someone to create your assignment. The ethical guidance will provide feedback on structure, methodology and clarity. The original work is yours to keep.
Asking for guidance does not necessarily mean you are cheating. It is beneficial to use the resources available. They expect students to seek assistance if they're stuck.
Reviewing Your Work
I focused on chapters in isolation initially. However, later I realized the work in its entirety had numerous repetitions in terms that were inconsistent and also missing hyperlinks. If you go through the entire project thoroughly, you'll find inconsistencies. Imagine yourself as the examiner. It will be easier to spot errors that you would have didn't notice previously.
Procrastination Destroys Quality
This is a major problem. I was hoping to finish data analysis and writing in a couple hours. That did not work. Each delay affected the quality.
Start early. Even one paragraph or section every day adds up. The project is now more manageable, not overwhelming.
What I Learned
The MBA project isn't hard because of the complexity. It's complicated because students don't have enough planning, clarity or guidance. Incorrect mistakes are common. The key is to learn how to avoid them and move forward.
The ability to organize is beneficial, but flexibility is essential. Things rarely go as planned. The data might not be there as well as supervisors might delay the process, obstacles will appear. The difference lies in how you handle these problems. Split tasks into segments to focus on one task at a time, and maintain the right expectations.
Projects impart skills that transcend academics. Discipline in research, time management clarity of writing and problem solving are some of the lessons that remain relevant in professional life. This project can be stressful, but it's also practical.

If you're just beginning your MBA project, choose an area that you could actually study. Establish clear goals. Make small steps. Get help when you need it. Pause for breaks. Make sure your writing is simple. Avoid chasing perfection. Begin at an early age.
