The Real Struggles MBA Students Face While Completing Their Projects



When I began my MBA project I thought it would be a simple task. Select a subject, do some research, write it out and submit. Easy. I imagined my work done in just a few weeks with a few late nights prior to the deadline. Reality came in fast. It's not just a report. It tests your planning, flexibility and the ability to deal with unexpected problems. In my class, almost everyone has had some difficulty in one way or the other.



A lot of students believe they can apply the same approach to their papers or studies. However, in the following weeks they find that deadlines are a bit closer than they had hoped or that the data isn't complete, chapters don't align and motivation suffers. The MBA project can become overwhelming should you not manage it properly.



Below I will describe the most common challenges students face along with ways to deal with them. There isn't a magic formula but gaining experience from your mistakes can help immensely.



Choosing a Topic Is Harder Than It Looks



A topic could seem simple, but it's not. I made the mistake of choosing a topic, which seemed intriguing but was nearly impossible to achieve. It took weeks as I attempted to collect data from companies that did not respond. My classmates would pick trendy topics, without considering whether data was available. The result is the same. Then you go on for weeks, and then feel frustrated.



A practical subject is better than a dazzling one. It should correspond to your resources and your passion. For example for instance, instead of "The Future of Marketing in India" select "Social Media Marketing Strategies in Local Retail Stores." Objectives Are More Important Than You Think



The goals you set for your project should be clear and concise. There are many students who make the mistake of composing vague objectives like "To study the impact of leadership on productivity." This isn't telling the whole story. I had to rewrite mine multiple times to make them precise and precise.



Clare objectives can help you choose the method, methodology, and data collection analysis. If you don't have clear objectives, your project feels disconnected. I've learned to inquire about what exactly I'm looking to quantify and how I can determine if I'm successful. These questions create a huge difference in the quality of work.



Collecting and Analysing Data Is Painful



Data collection is where the majority of students struggle. I have spent countless hours calling small businesses asking questions. Some ignored me completely and others promised to answer questions that never materialized. Answers to online surveys are helpful but are often not always complete.



Analysis is another challenge. You could have the most perfect charts and tables but if it isn't clear the meaning behind them, they're unusable. My classmates copied graphs and charts without understanding. There is no proof for numbers unless you discuss them.



A good tip is to practice your survey with a handful of individuals first. It allows you to identify questions that are unclear and can help avoid time. Make sure you link your analysis to the goals. For instance, if your research analyzes customer satisfaction, be sure your questionnaire asks quantifiable questions regarding product quality, service reliability, and time to respond.



Time Management Is Tough



Time management is crucial but in MBA it is harder than it can sound. Between group work, lectures in internships, assignments, and lectures there's no time. I held off on chapters, thinking I could finish them in a few days. In the weeks following, I panicked.



Splitting the project into smaller projects can help. Separate it into literature review methods, data collection and analysis and write chapters in a separate way. Record small, incremental progress every week. A chapter or a portion completed every week can be a motivator.



Writing Is Harder Than You Think



Even when you have data ready, writing can be a challenge. I struggled to explain results in plain English. Certain sections felt repetitive. I revise the analysis chapter many times.



Keep your language simple and easily understood. Invite your friends to read sections. Sometimes being too caught up in your own project makes it hard to see errors. Fresh eyes help a lot.



Supervisors Can Be Helpful But Also Frustrating



It can be difficult. Some offer clear guidelines while others can be vague or difficult to understand. I waited two weeks to receive one reply, and it was delayed my progress.



The most important thing is to stay proactive. Plan specific questions, respond politely, and then record feedback. Supervisors are helpful but you must the responsibility of your own work.



Formatting and References Matter



At first, I didn't bother with formatting. Fonts, spacing, certificates. I thought that I could rectify them later. Big mistake. It nearly delayed the submission.



References are equally important. One missing citation can raise questions. Make use of tools to manage reference sources and work on it while writing chapters rather than waiting for the conclusion. Correct formatting will make your document simple to follow and more professional.



Stress Is Real



Stress is unavoidable. Deadlines, corrections and incomplete data can be a burden. Sometimes I sat at my computer, thinking I would never be able to finish.



Short breaks help. Speak to your friends, go for a walk, listening to music. Reward small successes. Achieving a completed literature review or data collection are milestones. They keep motivation high.



Ethical Confusion



Many students are confused as to the kind of assistance allowed. You may seek guidance but cannot have someone make your project. Ethics guidelines include feedback on structure, methodology and clarity. Original work must remain yours.



Requesting guidance does not necessarily mean you are cheating. It is smart to use the resources available. The teacher expects students to seek help when stuck.



Reviewing Your Work



I focused on chapters individually initially. Then I realized the project as a whole had repetitions, inconsistent terms and missing hyperlinks. Examining the whole project in depth reveals imperfections. Imagine yourself as the examiner. You'll see mistakes you missed otherwise.



Procrastination Destroys Quality



It is a huge issue. I was hoping to finish the data analysis and write in a couple hours. That never worked. Each delay degraded quality.



Begin early. Even a paragraph or a section every day adds up. The task becomes easier to manage instead of overwhelming.



What I Learned



The MBA project isn't difficult because of the complexity. It's tough because students do not have the proper planning, clarity, and guidance. It is normal to make mistakes. It is important to be able to recognize and keep moving forward.



Being organized can help, but flexibility is crucial. Things do not always go as planned. There will be data that isn't there while supervisors are delayed while obstacles will pop up. What's important is how you manage these challenges. Break tasks down into small pieces to focus on one task at a stretch, and make sure you have reasonable expectations.



Projects provide skills that aren't just academic. The discipline of research, time management clarity in writing, and problem solving are lessons that will be useful in your professional life. The project is stressful however, it's also practical.

If you're beginning your MBA assignment, choose a topic you can actually research. Set out your goals clearly. Make small steps. For help, contact the experts. Pause for breaks. Keep your writing simple. Avoid chasing perfection. Start on time.



The MBA project can be more that a formal report. It tests planning, patience and problem solving. It will be a struggle. Everyone does. However, every fight teaches us something. It's the final product that does not end with a submission. It molds you into researcher, student or a possible professional.
